Inspiration #13 5/7/13

Currently I’m reading the novel Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah. This book is about two best friends and the lives together. The prologue is written by one of the friends and you don’t really find out until the end who writes it. Hannah’s new novel Fly Away can stand as a companion novel. It just came out and I want to read it, so I’m rereading this one first.

I thought this poem was appropriate for today. I love e. e. cummings, definitely my favorite poet.

E. E. Cummings (1894 – 1962)
Humanity I Love You

Humanity i love you
because you would rather black the boots of
success than enquire whose soul dangles from his
watch-chain which would be embarrassing for both

parties and because you
unflinchingly applaud all
songs containing the words country home and
mother when sung at the old howard

Humanity i love you because
when you’re hard up you pawn your
intelligence to buy a drink and when
you’re flush pride keeps

you from the pawn shop and
because you are continually committing
nuisances but more
especially in your own house

Humanity i love you because you
are perpetually putting the secret of
life in your pants and forgetting
it’s there and sitting down

on it
and because you are
forever making poems in the lap
of death Humanity

i hate you

Inspiration #9 4/9/13

I’m currently re-reading the book This is Your Brain on Music by Dr. Daniel J. Levitin. He is a a neuroscientist and specializes in how music interacts with your brain. In this book he tries to explain how and why music is important in our life. He tries not to use big medical and musical terms so it’s easy for everyone to understand. The first time I read this book made me look at the music I listen to differently. It’s always a good idea to reevaluate and look at pieces of music and writing in different ways.

Inspiration #7 3/26/13

This is a clip from “A Chorus Line”. In this scene Cassie is explaining to Zach (the director) why she wants to be in the chorus line-rather than a star like he thinks. I saw this production on Saturday at the Fulton Theater. It was amazing, better than this video, though this is still good! I love how the music lines up with her dance moves. This scene is inspirational because Cassie is following her dreams, even though Zach doesn’t think it’s good enough for her.

Lost in Wonderland

This is a poem I wrote one night. I was just kind of venting. I had just finished watching ‘Alice in Wonderland’ so the characters were fresh in my mind.

Lost in Wonderland

Well I tried my best, what’s done is done.

You never know, you never see,

Exactly all it takes to be me.

“You’re smart,” she said, “scored higher than 110.

But now you’re stuck in your head.”

Of course I’m in my head,

It’s only there I have a friend.

But I go look at myself,

And say “you’re not good enough today.”

I’m not good enough because you make me so.

I try so hard,

But it’s never good enough.

You can’t see how badly I want this.

None of this makes sense,

I’m losing my head.

Down the rabbit hole I go,

I must be going mad.

“Off with her head,” the Red Queen cries

As I fill with dread.

Nothing will be the same again.

Perhaps you’ll fall in love once more,

And forget about me, walking out the door.

Or maybe a symphony of voices in your head

Will tell you enough, this love is dead.

Down I go, I’m late, I’m late.

Mad Hatter I see,

Jabberwocky save me.

Off with its head,

“Dear you’re next,” the voice says

I’m sorry, I’m sorry but you’ve left me for dead.

I can’t function now,

And I didn’t function then.

Thousands of miles to cross,

This thing won’t last,

Oh no it won’t.

Let’s stop the speeding train in its path.

Pitter patter falls the rain,

Just outside my window.

Hear the roar right now outside of yours

As the waves crash against the shore.

I lay my head upon my pillow,

The blankets drown around me.

Fighting the tears I close my eyes,

And think of something else to see.

A long hallway,

Doors getting smaller and smaller,

I can’t squeeze through,

I guess I’m done here.

Never will I forget the hurt and pain,

I’ve been going mad.

Ever since this started.

Ever since this ended.
